Akin Salawu - Writer/ Director/ Editor
I have a bachelors degree from Stanford University where I founded and
ran ergo student theater troupe which earned me the Sherifa Omade
Edoga Prize for mounting culturally diverse theatre. I received my Master
of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University where I was accepted
with the Dean's Fellowship.
I am a two time Tribeca All Access Writer for my stageplay, You Dead
Yet?, and my screenplay, Glory Masters. Glory Masters was awarded
Faculty Honors for the 2006 Columbia Film Festival and won me a spot
in Columbia's ScriptConnect program. The New Heritage Reading of
You Dead Yet? was received with a standing ovation.
The grassroots effort has truly improved my life and ability to write work
that matters. I'm Special Projects Coordinator and New Jersey State
Director for Barack the Youth Vote as well as a NJ for Obama
organizer. I connect with the Brooklyn for Barack crew a lot because
they gave me my first opportunity to whisper into the political
conversation. If you don't risk anything, you risk even more...
"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising
every time we fall."
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right."
"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole
staircase, just take the first step."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you,
then you win."
Those who have been required to memorize the world as it is will never
create the world as it might be.
